Earlier this year, Shirel Guez of New York City cancelled her scheduled gastric bypass procedure and took weight loss into her own hands. By drastically changing her lifestyle and riding at Flywheel regularly, she’s lost an incredible 115 pounds – “That’s like an entire person off my body!” she says – and found a new love for life. Read on for her story.
In September 2014, I weighed 350 pounds. I had pre-diabetes, sleep apnea, and an unhealthy resting heart rate of 104 BPM. I was only 24-years-old, and my doctor told me I wouldn’t make it to 30. He urged me to undergo gastric bypass surgery, so I scheduled my appointment for January 2015. A week prior to the procedure, my uncle passed away. It was a huge wake-up call; he was healthy and in great shape, which made me wonder, “what could happen to me?” The timing was also a sign that there had to be another way to lose the weight.
I started making significant improvements to my eating habits, but it wasn’t until I tried Flywheel that I really felt the change. My first class was a true challenge, but I gave it another try and I’m so happy that I did. My second ride was with Kara B., who took me under her wing and helped me feel part of the FLYFam while making substantial changes in my life. She’s also my fitspiration!
As for my rides, I’m now doing doubles and triples often, and look at every class as a chance to push forward. I truly believe we aren’t given anything we can’t handle. When you’re in class and the instructor gives you a certain number, you’re not always sure you can reach it. But once you put your heart into it? Anything is possible.
It’s been almost one year since I’ve started Flywheel, and I’ve lost 115 pounds. My resting heart rate is down to a healthy 52 BPM and my asthma is almost gone. Vitals aside, my doctor was completely blown away when he saw me a month ago!
I couldn’t have turned my life around without the team at Flywheel Lincoln Square. Instructors Kara, Wendy, and Adam have been my mentors both on the bike and off. Wendy always reminds me that even though she may have helped with my journey, I’m the one who made the changes. And it’s true – I feel so happy and proud of myself. I always walk out of the studio feeling like a million bucks!
The Flywheel change is different because it’s physical and emotional – I now feel balanced and confident. We have one life in this world so why not make it the best life? I also love Flywheel’s motto: Never Coast. I spent my whole life coasting. And now that I don’t, I have a second chance.
