CELEBRATING NATIONAL SISTER’S DAY: SIBLINGS WHO FLY TOGETHER

By August 7, 2016 No Comments

“A sister can be seen as someone who is both ourselves and very much not ourselves – a special kind of double.” – Toni Morrison

Morrison wasn’t talking about a Flywheel double, but we know firsthand that the bond formed inside the studio can positively impact a sibling relationship. In honor of National Sister’s Day, we sat down to chat about all things FLY with five fabulous, fit sister pairs from across the country.

Morgan and Lauren Wright, Dallas, TX

How did you each start coming to Flywheel?

We started at Flywheel a little over a year ago when we were looking for a better cardio workout, and we instantly loved it. It’s definitely challenging, but you make it what you want it to be each time. Regardless of how hard you push yourself, you definitely see the results of your hard work. We love the instructors and how hands-on they are in helping you achieve your goals.

How often do you both come together?

We took every class together about 3-4 times a week until Morgan recently moved to DC. Now we try to take classes separately as much as possible in both cities and talk about our scores after. When one of us visits the other, whether in Dallas or DC, we always fit in a couple FLY sessions together. It is always on our to-do list.

What about Flywheel inspires you to work out as a pair?

We definitely challenge each other and try to beat each other with our high scores from time to time, but it also gives us “sister time.” Going together is an easy way to keep us accountable and make sure we get our workouts in.

Has Flywheel changed your relationship at all?

Flywheel definitely helps us keep in touch with one another while living in two different cities. We’ll call each other after class to discuss how we did, what our Power scores were, and so on. It’s a really fun way to keep in touch!

Jen and Karly Hankin, Raleigh, NC

How did you each start coming to Flywheel?

We’ve always worked out together but we were struggling to find the right gym in Raleigh. We discovered Flywheel in December 2014 through a few friends and frequenting Cameron Village.

How often do you both come together?

We spend way too much time at the studio! We typically FLY together around four times a week.

What about Flywheel inspires you to work out as a pair?

Flywheel is the only place where you can sweat that hard in 45 minutes. We love to start our day on the bike and make sure we’re both up in time for 7am classes. We push each other; it’s competitive & energizing.

Has Flywheel changed your relationship at all?

We’ve motivated each other in fitness a lot more since starting Flywheel. Our Power points have become a normal topic of conversation, and it’s really fun for us to track our progress and strive for new personal bests.

Heidi and Michela Deck, Boston, MA

How did you each start coming to Flywheel?

Heidi: We were both new to the area and trying to find our workout routine here. After trying Flywheel via ClassPass, I quickly became addicted and thought Michela would love it too. After I bought Michela a 5-pack for Christmas, we both started coming non-stop and decided to do the unlimited membership. Once FlyBarre was added to the studio, we committed to both.

How often do you both come together?

H: We love taking class together but our schedules only allow us to do that on the weekends. I have to be at work early so I do the 5:30am classes almost every day. We usually get to see each other in the crossover as Michela is on her way to the 6:30am!

What about Flywheel inspires you to work out as a pair?

It’s always fun booking neighboring bikes and bopping along to the killer playlists the instructors put together. We went through a little stretch where the competitiveness was getting intense but we figured out how to manage that and just have fun with each other in class. We encourage each other to sign up for classes and pushed each other to get stronger.

Has Flywheel changed your relationship at all?

We’ve always been incredibly close and Flywheel has been a fun way to spend time together and push each other to meet our fitness goals. We weren’t into cycling prior to Flywheel but we’re now riding 192 miles together in the PMC next weekend! It’s opened our eyes to cycling and has been such a fun thing to share.

Danielle Vogel and Haley Rosengarten, Washington, DC

How did you each start coming to Flywheel?

Haley: I was very familiar with Flywheel because I lived in NYC for six years and fell in love with indoor cycling. When the DC studio opened up the block from Danielle’s business, Glen’s Garden Market, she was over the moon. What could be better than coming across the river to spend Saturday morning at Flywheel, and then heading to Glen’s for the best brunch in town?

How often do you both come together?

H: We have very different schedules. I live in Arlington and work in McLean and Danielle lives and works in DC. We have started to really miss sister time, so we always make Saturday morning classes together. We will sign up – each on our favorite bikes and never next to each other — and catch up after class. It is one of the best parts of the week! Danielle goes more regularly, based on her proximity, and I come in one to three times a week.

What about Flywheel inspires you to work out as a pair?

Flywheel embraces our love for competition without causing us to compete against each other. We come out of class talking about how the class/instructor made us better, and we enjoy working out together without feeling like we’re going head-to-head.

Has Flywheel changed your relationship at all?

Yes! One of the best parts of Flywheel is the instructors and staff. We always talk about the latest playlist that inspired us to push harder or smile bigger! We both have very different professions and it is great to be able to laugh, connect and enjoy something together.

Lauren and Beth Hall, Raleigh, NC

How did you each start coming to Flywheel?

I had the scoop and Beth followed suit! I was really into a local spin studio when I lived in NYC, and was thrilled to discover a Flywheel so close to my apartment when I moved to Raleigh. I brought Beth as a guest and she got hooked pretty quickly!

How often do you both come together?

We both signed up for memberships (on the same day of course) after completing a Challenge and falling in love with the schedule and instructors. We are probably at FLY around 9 times a week, and 8 out of 9 times we are together!

What about Flywheel inspires you to work out as a pair?

We like working out as a pair because it helps us motivate each other and it makes the workouts even more fun. It’s just not the same taking a barre class without the other and not having someone to look over and giggle at when a move gets particularly hard (or to purposely kick.)

Has Flywheel changed your relationship at all?

We have always been incredibly close so we love finding things we can do together. It goes beyond taking classes together – we love shopping for workout gear together, we have elaborate text chains every Sunday to plan our schedule. We have also gotten friends in on it so it gives us a fun social outlet to experience together too! The feeling of community is what really makes Flywheel so special to us.
