The controversy over carbohydrates seems to have lasted as long as that steep hill in our hour-long Flywheel class. We’re exhausted and wondering when it’s going to end. While our 60 minute class does have a rewarding finish, the back-and-forth over carbs continues to drag on. There are so many mixed messages and misconceptions out there. So, we turned to an expert to find out if carbs truly are the healthy eater’s enemy or if they are essential for any diet. In August 2013, I left my friends and family on the East Coast and moved over 1,000 miles for a great professional opportunity with the new College Football Playoff.  My career was advancing and everything seemed great, but my health began to deteriorate. The first thing to go in my busy schedule was working out. Then I turned 30 and realized that my metabolism didn’t quite work as quickly as it used to. Overall, the combination of a hectic work schedule, a cross country move and no longer being twenty-two found me sluggish, above my ideal weight, unhappy at times and just flat out lazy. Kimberly Olson is an accounting and finance professional by day and Flywheel instructor by night (and weekends…and early mornings!). Because her job requires her to sit at a desk for hours at a time, she makes sure to get as much activity as she can before and after work. When she’s not on the instructor bike at Flywheel, she’s walking a mile to and from her office or walking up and down the eleven flights of stairs in her office building. “It takes a lot of effort to stay fit and juggle a full time job, but all of the fabulous instructors at Flywheel make it fun and easy to stay motivated,” says Kimberly. As the Beauty Editor at Women’s Health magazine, I place a lot of importance on feeling, looking, and, of course, being healthy. But it wasn’t always that way. Two years ago—a time when I’d regularly skip workouts to go to happy hour—a beauty brand hosted an event at Flywheel (to launch waterproof mascara!), and I took my first ride ever. The rest is history! I soon became hooked on the music, pushing myself to new limits, the mood-boosting endorphin rush (you haven’t lived until you’ve done a tap back in third position), the inspiring instructors, and the body-changing results. Now, I ride at least four times a week and credit Flywheel for being the “aha!” moment for my health—and my newfound love for fitness.
