How to Keep Your Skin on Track During the Holidays

It’s not just your diet and exercise routine that can take a hit this time of year. Keep your complexion in check with these five easy tricks and tips.

1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate.

Now’s the time to step up your hydration game—both internally and externally. Drinking tons of H20 is not only a good idea during a holiday party (try alternating water or seltzer in between cocktails to minimize the likelihood of a hangover the next day), but all season long. Chugging an extra bottle during class or hitting the water cooler more often will help hydrate your skin from the inside, out, which is especially important this time of year (alcohol plus cold weather equals seriously dry skin). When it comes to your skincare routine, swap lotions for thicker creams, or your standard face wash for a creamy cleansing oil. We’re big fans of the Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Cleansing Oil; the lavender scent makes it perfect for bedtime.

2Take a Probiotic.

An excess of sugary sweets (oh hey, Christmas cookies and candy canes) means one thing for your skin: pimples. And since no one wants to deal with breakouts this time of year, adding a probiotic supplement to your routine can minimize the likelihood of acne flares caused by too much sugar. Also nice: Probiotics help alleviate some of the holiday bloat that inevitably comes with all of those delicious treats.

3Fight Puffy Eyes.

One too many glasses of champs or one too many light nights can leave you with majorly puffy peepers the next day. Reach for an eye cream that contains caffeine; the ingredient helps constrict blood vessels to combat excess swelling. One to try: First Aid Beauty Eye Duty Triple Remedy, which also has the added benefit of a hint of tint to conceal dark circles.

4. Exfoliate More.

Skin can start to appear dull and lackluster this time of year, so consider exfoliating more frequently than normal. Peel pads, like the Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel, contain a mix of acids to dissolve dead skin cells and are gentle enough to use every day. Best of all, it only takes seconds to swipe one across your skin, and they’re perfectly portable; stash them in your gym bag to use after class and your complexion will look fresh and glowy in every holiday photo.

5. Do a Skin Detox.

If all else fails, hit the reset button on your complexion with a deep cleansing mask. Look for one that contains charcoal, like the Dermalogica Charcoal Rescue Masque, which gets deep into pores to pull out gunk and impurities. It’s ideal whether you’re dealing with a breakout, want to get rid of a full face of makeup, or just need an excuse to take a few minutes and pamper yourself.
