5 Ways to Avoid Summer Breakouts

By August 25, 2017 No Comments

The list of things we love about summer is endless, but the one thing most definitely NOT on that list? Pesky pimples. High temps plus high humidity equal more sweat….which equals way more breakouts on both your face and body. Happily, with the right tips and product picks, you can easily stay blemish-free—from head to toe— all season long.

1. Cleanse, Cleanse, Cleanse

Yes, it’s super simple, and yes, it can make a major difference. Aside from nightly cleansing (a non-negotiable), be sure to wash your face immediately post-class, too. Letting sweat sit on your skin is a recipe for clogged pores and pimples. If your complexion veers towards oily, no matter the season, use a face wash with blemish-busting and oil-reducing salicylic acid, like Skin Laundry Acne Face Wash.

2. Wash Your Bod

The previous rule goes for the skin below your chin, too. Your chest and back are both areas that are especially pimple-prone, and sitting around in a sweaty sports bra and workout top for hours after you leave the studio won’t help matters. Keep a pack of acne-fighting cleansing cloths on hand to wipe down sweaty spots on your body as soon as your workout is over. We Yes To Tomatoes Blemish Clearing Facial Towelettes. 3. Step Up Your Exfoliating Game

Dead skin cells, excess sweat and oil, makeup and sunscreen residue—all of the above can build-up on your skin and clog pores. Along with constant cleansing, exfoliating more frequently is also important. At-home peel pads, like the Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel (a cult-classic), contain a blend of different exfoliating acids and are fast and effective, yet gentle enough to use every day.  There’s a version for body, too; the Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Glow Pad for Body does double-duty as self-tanner, helping you maintain a gorgeous summer glow.

4. Use a Targeted Treatment

If pimples do pop up, reach for a spot treatment with benzoyl peroxide; the anti-inflammatory ingredient can help quickly reduce the size and redness of blemishes. Find it in the Oxy On-The-Go Acne Stick, a convenient, portable, and mess-free formula that’s ideal to toss in your gym bag.

5. Eat More Zinc

Eat your way to clearer skin by loading up on foods rich in zinc, such as pumpkin seeds, chickpeas, and spinach (we’re sensing a delicious #FlyFuel salad in the works). The mineral is both anti-inflammatory—see our previous point on benzoyl peroxide—and may help inhibit the growth of acne-causing bacteria, a plus if your pimples are chronic.
