5 Healthy Caffeine Fixes That Aren’t Coffee

The single most important thing that we do every morning is how we choose to begin our day.

 

The first few minutes after waking are crucial; when you wake up, the thoughts that cross your mind, how you choose to fuel your body, and how you prep for the day ahead will determine the type of the day that is in store for you. What kind of day do you want to have?

 

 

I love coffee. It’s one of the first things that I reach for when I wake up. The thing is, coffee isn’t always the answer, and it definitely won’t work on it’s own. Sure, coffee boosts (most of our) energy levels, but it doesn’t last. It also dehydrates us, gives us “coffee breath,” and sometimes causes cramping. Additionally, if you didn’t get a good night’s sleep, it’s effectiveness actually decreases! So, here are my favorite, non-coffee morning energy boosters. Use them with or without coffee, but definitely give them a try!

 

1. Water with Lemon
The first thing you should always do when you wake up is to immediately reach for a glass (or 2 or 3!) of water with lemon. Make sure that you drink it at room temperature or heat it up with some ginger for some extra zing. Lemon water in the morning hydrates, aids digestion, and provides natural energy without added sugar or calories.

 

2. Matcha Tea Latte
Aside from it’s subtle caffeine content and delicious taste, matcha tea is very high in antioxidants, amino acids, and chlorophyll. While a cup of green tea is an excellent pick-me-up, a cup of matcha is even more powerful because you are ingesting the entire ground-up tea leaf as opposed to simply drinking water steeped in tea leaves. I love to whisk matcha powder and a small splash of coconut oil into warmed, homemade cashew milk sweetened with dates.

 

3. Green Smoothie
Why not hydrate, fuel, and energize all in one shot? Green smoothies are an excellent, nutrient-dense, and delicious way to boost your morning and keep you full until lunchtime. Prepare your ingredients the night before, so all that you have to do in the morning is blend! My favorite Green Smoothie recipe is here.

 

4. A Quality Breakfast
Coffee and a doughnut is not breakfast. If you tend to run out of the door in the morning, create a few simple, to-go breakfast options that you love and are easy to prepare ahead of time (overnight oats, muesli, trail mix, protein shake, power balls). If you have time for yourself in the morning, prep a beautiful, nourishing breakfast before you get to work (my favorite is a “Power Bowl” filled with vegetables, true whole grains, a protein (I love tempeh!), and good fats (hello avocado!)

 

5. #DawnPatrol
I have never been and will never be a “morning person.” But! I feel happier and more energized (and I’m way more productive) throughout the day when I workout in the morning (and you will, too). Luckily, Flywheel has a TON of early morning classes to choose from (and, if you’re in Philly or Bryn Mawr, I teach quite a few of them!). If a morning class is just out of the cards for you, get up :15 minutes early for a quality stretch, take your dog on a lengthy walk, or put on some of your favorite tunes while you get ready and dance up a storm.
