#MondayMotivation: How Flywheel Helped Rider Jorge Mendez Unleash His Inner Athlete

Jorge Mendez

Every Monday, instructor Emily Burkhardt sets out to interview members of the FLY community–from instructors, to staff members, to riders. What does Flywheel mean to them? This week,  meet rider Jorge Mendez.

Hey Everyone!

As one of the National coaches for our Fly challenges, I get to work with thousands of riders and pulsers that are dedicated to creating their best self.

Jorge Mendez is one of our riders on the West Coast that participated in the past challenge. He was very active on the Facebook page and always encouraged others to keep working towards their goals, including himself.

I was recently inspired by Jorge when he posted that Flywheel has helped unleash his inner athlete, and will be riding from San Francisco to Los Angeles this summer for a good cause (see more below!)

What first brought you to Flywheel?

I originally found Flywheel through ClassPass. I took a few classes and fell in love with not only the community, but the method as well. After taking cycling classes elsewhere, the difference was obvious. A few days after my birthday in 2015, I became an official member of the FLYFam.

What do you do?

I’m a Lead Teller at Wells Fargo. I help the Service Manager make sure the operations side runs smoothly and that our tellers balance at the end of the day. In other words I’m a Service Manager in training.

How does Flywheel make you feel?

Flywheel makes me feel like an athlete. The camaraderie and relationships I’ve built in almost two years push me more and more every day. It’s not only helped me gain a confidence I never knew I had but it also showed me that anything is possible. Thanks to becoming  beast on the bike I’m participating in the AIDS LifeCycle ride this year and biking from SF to LA in a span of 7 days from 6/4-6/10.

What does living a healthy lifestyle mean to you?

Living a healthy lifestyle means happiness. Knowing that I’m not only getting stronger every time but, that the inches and pounds are coming off; along with gaining muscle brings me the utmost happiness. Looking back a few years ago I’d never imagine being in the best shape of my life (so far!)

What brings you joy?

Seeing my favorite people at Dawn Patrol! They make waking up at 4:45am every morning a treat. Just knowing that we’re all there for one common goal, and the fact that we’ve become family and that we can cheer, laugh, cry and celebrate together makes it all worth it. Seeing my spin bestie Cheri Wilder (Bidzilla), my FLYMom Jena Denitz, Jordan Monet Orlando, Veronique Lazoore, Emily Gordon-Recht, Graham LaBass, Steven Goldsmith, Lacey Stone, James Greenebaum, Victor Self, Meghan O’Donoghue, Elizabeth Hill and all of our other wonderful instructors, the Wolfpack (Magdaly and Shira, Veronique), Bea C, Lora Silverman, Shelley Lawrence, Tonya Kong, and friends I’ve met along the way at any time of the day always brings a smile to my face. Just knowing that not only me, but everyone in the stadium can feed off their energy and that we all pay it forward by inspiring one another has no price.

Start your week strong, and unlock your inner athlete like Jorge!

Peace & Love,

 Emily Burkhardt
